Stop Staring At Me!

Okay this is supposed to be a feel good self-improvement type post. Can’t you tell by the title? So are you one of those people that gets that weird feeling every time you go to the gym that everyone around you is staring at you?..I get that feeling sometimes as well, usually when I’m wearing my  “Cats Are People Too”  workout gear. But anyways I hear from people quite often. Usually women. That they are either afraid to go the gym or to take any of the group classes. Or if they do go to the gym they only use the treadmill because they are worried that other people will stare at them for being out of shape or just plain lost in what they should be doing.

I say…Forgeddaboutit (this needs to be pronounced in your best New Jersey accent to be effective)

Just remember that those people who you think are staring at you are just people, I think you would be surprised at how many are so vain that they don’t notice anyone but themselves. Or they are just like you, they are just as busy being self-conscious about themselves to be concerned about you…So get in there, strap on your Beats by Dre or whatever you use to avoid conversations and get your business done at the gym.

So stop letting what people may think hold you back from reaching your goals. If you want to hit the free weights, or take some kick ass new dance class or even try that Hot Yoga for the first time. I can almost guarantee that the other people around you will either..

– Not notice you because they’re just as freaked out about being there as you.

-Admire you for taking control and trying to better yourself.

So get in there and DO IT!! Because afterwards you’re going to be Happy. And sweaty, and probably smell. But dammit you will be Happy!

But if they are giving you funny looks I would recommend not free-balling it in the gym next time if you’re a dude or wear a sports bra next time so your girls don’t pop out for a visit if you’re a lady.

Alright let’s take this from another angle, let’s say you do go to the gym fairly regular but your still feeling nervous about venturing any further than that damn treadmill or elliptical…You see the Promised Land (Free Weight Section) off in the distance. And perhaps you’re not really worried about anyone looking at you, but you simply don’t know what weights to lift or how to lift them.

Well it’s time step off the treadmill and walk towards the Promised Land..

I’m a firm believer that weight training is more efficient at burning those nasty calories than just straight cardio…You know that treadmill thing you have been stuck on like Gilligan’s Island. Well the rescue boat is here, so go pick up some weights. Don’t be scared, weights won’t bite you ( I would suggest holding them firmly, dropping them on your foot will cause people to stare at you)

So I could suggest a multitude of different workouts. But I’m not an expert. But you know what the Internets are full of people who say they are. And Hell some of them actually are. So do some research, find an easy routine to start with, to get your feet wet. It’s not that hard to grab some light weights and start working with them, unless you have that illness called  “I have an Excuse for everything”  and in that case I would suggest you seek help. Like from a Personal Trainer. Yes, they are at nearly every gym, they can help you with working through your Excuses issues.

Just remember when you’re trying to get in shape, you need to make it a lifestyle, you can’t go to the gym for 30 min then stop at McCrapper on the way home , and sit your ass on the couch watching Oprah reruns while snacking cheesy snack chips all evening and expected a miracle to happen. It’s going to take hard work, consistency, strong will and determination.

I will see you in the Promised Land…

Something Is Better Than Nothing!

somethingisbetterthannothing

So I would like to believe I’m one of those people that will give 100% no matter what it is I’m doing…But, like most people,  Once in a while I find myself in circumstances beyond my control and giving 100% just isn’t an option.

During these times it might seem easier just to do nothing, I have a valid excuse right? But I like to lean towards doing “something”  It is better than nothing, perhaps you disagree and maybe you think 100% effort in everything you do is possible… I’m just trying to be realistic.

So when it comes to bettering yourself, doing  “Something”  is almost always better than nothing at all.  Unless the “Something”  you’re thinking of happens to be  “eating Doritos while watching Oprah re-runs”  or  “Calling the Psychic Hotline for fitness advice”…The most difficult part of getting healthy can simply be making the first move.

Taking the first step out of your house for a run…

Mixing up the first ingredients for a healthy meal…

Saying  “No”  to that first tasty doughnut at work…

Waking up earlier than usual so you have time to exercise…

Or in my case this evening, taking the time to write this article, I told myself I would spend a certain amount of time each day to writing, it’s my therapy, my release and sticking with it even when I feel like doing something else is important in many ways.

The argument could be made that taking the first step is even more crucial if you’re  “just”  getting started for the first time. If you’re overweight, out of shape, and having a rough time in your life. The thought of exercising on a daily basis probably seems daunting to you. If you’ve never run a mile before, a marathon probably seems like some fantasy that only imaginary people run.  Or what If you’re trying to get out of the thousands of dollars of credit card debt you find yourself in, saving a few dollars here and there might seem like a waste of time.

Keeping your head screwed on tight during these stressful times is also important. Remember to keep your composure, and think to yourself that something is better than nothing at all.

If you don’t have time for a full workout, Do half of it.

You can’t do a full push up, Do half of one.

Can’t run a full mile, Walk it (this is what I usually do… Hate running)

If you’re going out of town and there’s only bad food. Do the best you can to eat healthy for as many meals possible

If you can’t pay off $200 bucks a month. Do $100 or $50 or even $25

So..Is  “Something”  really better than Nothing?

You might be thinking.. “This just seems like a lot of half-assing going on here”  and what ever happened to giving it your best in everything you do?

Okay let me clarify this shit, you’re not half-assing it if you can’t do something all the way for a legitimate reason. For example. Weather, unexpected work projects, your kid gets sick, flight delays, food poisoning, whatever.. “Shit Happens and Life Doesn’t Always Go According To Plan”

So in these types of circumstances, I would advocate for “Something” over doing nothing at all.

We humans are creatures of habit, each day we make decisions that will either take us one step closer or one step farther from our goals. When our goal is trying to get into shape, working on good eating habits and positive reinforcement is a key factor for having long-term success.

If you tell yourself it’s okay to  “skip just this one workout” the next time you have a conflict arise it will just be that much easier to “I’ll skip just this one too”.

But… If you can drag your ass out the door for a workout even when you really don’t want to, it will be easier to convince yourself  “Hey, I did it last time, I can do it this time as well”

So it doesn’t matter if you don’t have time for the whole workout, Half of it is so much better than none at all. Not only are you burning more calories than you would if you skipped it and you’re also planting an  “I’m getting my ass healthy”  seed in the front of your mind for the rest of the day. Which hopefully will influence you to make other good choices throughout the day as well.

It can be easy for us all to get overwhelmed at times by looking too far ahead into the future and freaking out. Take things one small change at a time, one day at a time and focus on putting one foot in front of the other…You can figure the rest out as you go.

So this turns out to be the easiest part to try and explain to you, but might be the hardest part to implement.

Shut Up…Stop Complaining…Stop Making Excuses…Suck It Up. And Do Something…Do Anything!!

“No one believes your excuses except for you”

We all have crappy situations and circumstances that we are dealing with in our lives, Not enough time, Too tired, Bad day at work, Girlfriend cheated on me, Lost my job, My cat ran away. Whatever. These things will only be your downfall if you let them. If you really want to start living a better life, you will need to stop using these excuses as crutches to make yourself feel better about avoiding your responsibilities.

So go do something…Go do anything.

If you haven’t exercised in a month or so, go for a walk on your lunch break. If you have eaten 20 unhealthy meals in a row, make tonight the first healthy meal. If you usually chain smoke 30 cigs a day, aim for 29 or 28.  Aim to be better, no matter how small the difference is. Every little bit counts, every little bit helps.

Now Get Started and Have a Kick Ass Day!!

Water…The Destroyer Of Worlds!

waterthedestroyerofworlds

That was a catchy headline, for a less than interesting topic for most people… “Water”

I am a Water fanatic, I believe it is the purest and best thing for you.  I know I get enough each day, probably enough for three people.  How much water do YOU drink every day? If you’re serious about getting to the best level of personal health and if you’re exercising and running each day I can almost guarantee that you’re not drinking enough unless you’re totally making a concentrated effort to do so.

Are you going all out when you go to the gym? If so you should be consuming a gallon of water a day minimum if you’re a dude.  And close to 3/4ths of a gallon if you’re a girl.

If you’re not hitting the gym that hard, then I guess you could get away with less H2O…But why? If you’re not hitting the gym hard and giving it you’re all then you’re just wasting time.

It is important that you don’t rely on your  “thirst-meter”  in your body to remind you to drink water, especially when working out.  Your brain will tell you that your thirsty long after your body actually needs it, so I find it’s pretty helpful to just go get a few gulps at the water fountain or from my jug during each set. Bring a water bottle with you to the gym so you don’t have to get up from the machine every few minutes that way you’re more likely to get enough to drink.

In case you are unaware you have two kidneys in your body, you know those things that boxers try to beat out of the opponents body. When you workout, you sweat. Your body loses fluid and it needs to be put back in or else your muscles will suffer and your workout will suffer (that’s a lot of un-needed suffering) Your body will often process the liquid before it’s able to put it back where it belongs, you need to drink more than normal after a workout. So here are some of the best method I could research to keep ahead of the fluid game when you’re working out.

About two hours prior to working out, drink between half a liter and a liter of water (that about four cups of water) Some sites say you can drink any liquid as long as it’s not booze, But water is always the best choice…Yay, for water !!

Okay so while you’re working out, you should get water into your system quickly so it can rapidly replace the water loss through sweating (And if you’re not sweating you are not working hard enough) Start drinking it before you even start feeling thirsty. In between each set, keep chugging…6-8 fluid ounces every 15 minutes.

After your done busting ass in the gym, you need to get your body ready for the next workout by getting the levels back to normal. If you were properly chugging your water, you probably need to piss like a Clydesdale (A big ass horse) However, your fluid balances still aren’t back to normal, so you need to keep drinking. (Don’t wimp out now) If you can work some sodium (salt) into either your liquid or your food intake after the workout, your body will retain water longer, giving it more time to absorb and use and regain balance. You know what has sodium in it? Most of those energy drinks like Gatorade.

Drink water throughout the day.  Not only is it good for you, but it’s good to stay hydrated even if you aren’t working out that day.  Trying to lose weight?  Drink lots of water before you eat lunch and you might find your appetite curbed. If you work in an office or from home, you already have a free and abundant supply of the good stuff (water). Just keep a water bottle on your desk and fill it up every morning when you get there.  And who knows what kind of gossip you will hear over by the water cooler while you’re there filling up.  Everyone likes office gossip right? Except when it’s about me then your all just jerks….Anyways drink your water!!

Happiness…It’s Achievable!

happinessitsachievable

Alright so in a recent article I wrote about how to achieve your goals of Success and Fulfillment, but perhaps something even more important and at times even more rewarding is Happiness.  Sometimes when we want something so badly it can end up evading us, for many reasons, Happiness is no different, the reason Happiness seems to evade millions of people who desperately search for it is because they are looking in the wrong places. Haven’t you heard that before?

The fact of the matter is too many people look for Happiness  “outside”  of themselves instead of  “inside.”

So many people feel that they would just be Happy if they could afford a new house of their own, or how many people do you know that have to own all the latest gadgets and toys thinking these things are the key too true Happiness. Having material possessions are great if you can afford what you have and realize they are simply just  “things”  that can enhance your life but certainly do not bring about true Happiness.

How about the people who feel that if they found the right life partner or if their children loved them more. Even in such cases, these people are searching for Happiness  “outside” themselves.

I recently watched a video about infants and how they interact with their parents, for the most part babies are extremely happy almost all the time, things such as physical discomfort can make them cry for a while but such aspects are fairly easy to fix and usually last only a short period. The video explained that infants are almost always in a state of natural Happiness because they are in constant awe of nature and the world around them. The video further explained that it is society, parents, friends, teachers and relatives that influence them with regards to what Happiness should mean. After I thought about for a while that made perfect sense to me.

So I know from my own personal situation that it can be difficult to undo all the layers of perception that have formed on your mind over the years.  However, I also know that it is never too late to try and address the issues and train yourself and your mind to be Happy.  I know what worked for me, but what I didn’t know was how best to explain it to someone else so that it made sense, and all this stuff is nothing new, a lot of it is simple truisms that we have heard throughout our lives, but like most things we hear we never really act upon until we find ourselves in a situation of desperation.  And I have been there.  A few times, but the last few years of my life have been a total transformation and reevaluation of everything I thought was right.

But now I can proudly say my life has never been Happier, and as Positive as it is now.  And I truly want others to experience this feeling as well, so here are some well-known tips that can help you shed your inhibitions and break away from the societal restraints that have held you back from true Happiness.

Happiness Is A State Of Mind:

It is really important that you understand and appreciate that your Happiness lies within you.  Think about this.  No one can make you unhappy if you have decided for sure that you will be Happy in every situation.  This might seem like it’s not realistic, but if you have made up your mind to be Happy, you can always seek out the Positive aspects of any given situation and still remain Happy.

Life can and will throw many challenges at you, but solutions will come faster and you will be able to cope better if you deal with them with a smile on your face.

Accept Who You Are:

One of the key reasons why people are unhappy is that they do not really like or love themselves enough. It is vital that you accept yourself for what you are without any exclusions and conditions to attain true Happiness. Don’t be overly critical about yourself.  Your looks, your brains, your capabilities or even your financial condition.

Just learn how to love yourself as you are.  You will soon realize that once you’re comfortable with who you are, others will accept you more willingly as well.

Take Care Of Your Health:

If you live an unhealthy lifestyle your body cannot be the home of a Happy mind. It is important that you understand the link between physical health and mental Happiness. If you are fit and healthy, you are more likely to exude positive energy.

Stay In The Company Of Positive People:

You really need to seek out people who are Happy and cheerful more often than not. Being around people who have a habit of being Negative and Critical, you are likely to get pulled into their world.

So avoid getting caught in this unnecessary negativity by associating with positive and uplifting people, they say you are who you associate with, so make them good ones.

Prioritize Your Life:

As we grow older, the demands that various people and circumstances that we are placed in tend to increase. While on one hand your job pressures increase, you may also feel the need to spend more time with your family and children. But then there’s your personal needs as well such as wanting to go to the gym or take off into the mountains for a hike.

Being able to balance these various responsibilities that you have in your life is important. If anyone of these tasks becomes paramount, you are likely to ignore the others. Like if you get extremely preoccupied with your work, your family life is likely to miss out, so balance is key, and it is something you need to figure out.

Be Grateful:

Saying a small  “Thank You”  for what you have can make a big difference. When you make it a habit to be grateful, you seek out the things that you do have. This helps you divert your mind from the negative thoughts of what you don’t have.

This of course doesn’t mean you give up trying, it just encourages you to think of future goals and achievements in a positive manner.

Take some time off to enjoy nature, here in Montana we have been blessed with some great  “Nature”  Enjoy your life and the small things that we all occasionally take for granted on a daily basis.

I hope these suggestions of what you could be doing to help you find the Happiness that is within you helps you succeed in finding it.

America Is Chunky And I Want To Help Slim It Down!

americaisfatandiwanttofixit

In case you haven’t noticed, there is something wrong with America.  We have an epidemic, well actually we probably have a whole bunch of epidemics but I am only focusing on one of them today, can you guess what I’m talking about? Of course not, you are too busy snacking on crap while you listen and watch crap, which in turn makes you feel like crap.

So cut the crap you silly skin bags, sorry I’ve been wanting to say that all day. Anyways, what am I talking about? Oh yeah, the problem with America is that America, home of the brave, land of the free is FAT!  We take the cake for being the fattest country on the planet, we super-size everything including our heart attacks.

Now I know it will be hard to change the way adults eat, they are set in their ways and resist change.  It would probably be easier to make Obama a better President than to make Bubba in Alabama give up friend chicken and beer.

But if you want to change the way a free society thinks, you don’t target the older people you target the youth. We have a greater chance of teaching little Timmy in second grade to make healthy choices than trying to teach little Timmy’s Dad ..Big Earl, cause Big Earl is already set in his ways and doesn’t want to hear your bullshit about what he should eat.

So screw Big Earl and let’s go after little Timmy and the rest of the kids, maybe the next generation will be healthier and maybe, just maybe Canada will then turn into the fattest country on the planet.

So my idea is simple, kids like games right?  So I thought of some new games we can teach kids while they are in school, and with any luck it will help them become healthier and more physically fit, it’s all about teaching them to make good choices and live a healthy lifestyle.

Game: You Sleep, You Lose

So this game is so simple it’s almost not even a game, there is only one rule…Stay Awake.

The object of the game is to see who can stay awake the longest. Now this game can’t really be played at school alone, so encourage the kids to stay awake when they go home, tell them not to sleep. Everyone knows that kids are at their least active while they are sleeping.  So the idea is to eliminate that 7-9 hours a day that kids spend sleeping and have them engaged in physical activities instead, the amount of fat burning this will cause is simply amazing.  This might sound off the wall right now, but just think about it for a while, you know deep down that it is a fantastic idea.

Game: Extreme Catch

I think every kid knows how to play catch, but Extreme Catch is a whole different animal. This game will help bring kids closer together, it will teach teamwork, sportsmanship and proper hand eye coordination.

The kids should be given a rubber ball to throw back and forth, the goal is to catch the ball ten times in a row without dropping it.  If someone does drop it, the PE teacher should immediately hack off the students non-dominate hand with a machete.  You will be amazed at how focused the kids will be while playing this game, also for the kids who lose a hand it will help them eat less as well.  Plus they will save money on gloves, and they will always value and appreciate their good hand and won’t do stupid stuff to lose it.  See all kinds of benefits.

Game: Mad Max

This game teaches self-reliance, it will make the kid problem solve and use his head.  The object of the game is fairly simple, you find an empty classroom, lay mats out across the floor, along with various edged weapons and clubs, baseball bats, etc.

How to play…turn the lights off to the room, you have two boys or two girls enter the room, and when the lights come on the two boys run to grab a weapon and try to eliminate the their opponent, same goes for the girls.  Only one student can walk out of the room a winner.  Boys will never fight against the girls, we know that would be unfair, the boys would never win.

Game: Flaming Stars

In this game, the PE teacher sets up a pitching machine in the middle of the gym floor. You have all the kids line up against one wall, the object of the game is for the students to run to the opposite wall of the gym, without getting hit by a flaming baseball.

The PE teacher will douse the balls in lighter fluid and light them prior to letting the pitching machine hurl the balls at the students. It is a fun option to turn the lights of in the gm which will make the flaming baseballs look more spectacular while traveling towards the students. This game will really help the students tap into their hidden athleticism and metal focus in order to avoid becoming a flaming catcher’s mitt.

Game: Road Rage

This game is fun on many levels, have the students gather on the football field, have them partner up, teams of two, and to make sure they stay together you have to tie them together at the waist with rope, this will teach them to work as a team literally.

The PE teacher will get a golf cart or ATV, whichever is available at the school. The object of the game is for the teams to run from one end-zone to the other, while working as a team and while avoiding the PE teacher who is trying to run them down in the golf cart or ATV. This game takes fun and replaces it with survival instincts, the students will come away from this game stronger mentally and physically.

This Crazy Thing Called Life!

crazythingcalledlife

Well what are you going to do?  Nothing, because that’s Life.

Bad shit happens to good people, also bad shit happens to bad people too, but we don’t care because they deserved it.

But regardless of who it happened to we move on. Life can be a bitch sometimes. One day everything is fine at work and the next you get fired.  You buy a brand new Iphone, you decide not to buy the warranty this time and as soon as you get home you break your phone.  One day your wife is telling you how much she loves you and the next you hear her telling your brother the same thing…Yep, Life can be a bitch.

Listen, I’m not trying to be all negative and shit, but you just need to face the facts, this thing we call Life, well it’s pretty tough, you need to be stronger than it, otherwise you are toast.

Always remember crazy things happen and usually when you least expect it.  Like one minute you’re in the family room watching TV with your family and the next thing you know your Dad falls to the ground dead, your Mom gets up to go check on him but she trips over your foot, falls and hits her head on the end of the coffee table, Yep, she’s dead too! Then your brother starts to act like he is dying but he is totally faking it just to mess with you, Yep, your brother is a dick! But your parents are still dead. So yeah, Life is hard and brutal at times.

I don’t think any of us will totally understand why Life behaves the way it does.  There never seems to be a rhyme or reason to it all.  You could be going to the mall with a group of friends and when you get there you see another group of friends there, they never invited you.  That’s why you called these back-up friends, now you are pissed because you look uncool with the back-up friends…You wonder why did this have to happen, you can’t explain it, nobody can!

And there are times when Life can be completely random, sometimes you never know where you will end up at the end of the day.  Perhaps you will join a rugby team. Or maybe you will watch a rugby team play then start throwing rocks at them because you’re jealous and unstable. Or maybe you will start your own rugby team and then go play that other rugby team you saw earlier.  Or maybe rugby just isn’t your thing, perhaps you are more of a golfer, hell maybe you aren’t even human, maybe you’re just a dog with big dreams.

On a more positive note, the interesting thing about Life is that in Life nearly anything is possible.  Let’s say you want to be a Doctor or a Veterinarian or maybe you want to go beat Justin Bieber’s head in with an axe handle.  Perhaps you would rather beat Michael Moore’s head in with an axe handle.

Today in the world we live in anything is possible, you can even beat the entire cast of Big Bang Theory’s heads in with an axe handle if you wanted.  Some people may judge you for your actions, but that’s okay, that’s part of life too, so just ignore those haters and go beat anyone’s head in with an axe handle that you want to.

I personally wouldn’t recommend you beat anyone’s head in with an axe handle, I’m just saying the option is there.

Arnold Schwarzenegger once said  “Lifting weights is like having an orgasm”  I’m not sure where that fits in here but it just came to my mind.  See that’s a great example of how random Life can be.

There are times when people come up to me and say  “Who the hell are you?””Why are you in my bathroom?””Why are you peeing in my sink?” And my answer is always the same…”Listen, Life is full of mysteries, there are some of which we will never get the answers we are looking for, but the answers to your questions could be chalked up to the fact I’m a mentally ill person.”

In this Life there are two types of people, there are Winners and there are Losers. Some people know how to have a good time, they are in the gym, lifting heavy ass weights (Winners) and then there are some people who don’t work out, they just sit there smoking crack and eating sugary doughnuts, wearing three day old underwear (Losers).  Some people treat their bodies like a temple (Winners) and some treat their bodies like a dumpster behind McDonalds (Losers). Some people are Winners (Winners) and some people are Losers (Losers).

Well if you take anything away from reading this I hope it’s this…One day this amazing roller coaster ride we call Life will come to an end.  That’s just a sad fact of Life.  So you can either choose to live this totally random and unpredictable but totally Kick-Ass thing called Life to the fullest or you can choose to live a Life full of regrets…I choose to live my Life with  “No Regrats”  not even a single letter baby!!

Pssst…Hey Buddy, Want Some Excuses? I Got What You Need!

hillarybitchslapyou

So are you looking for some excuses today to not go workout?

Do you need help?  If you’re really needing some good excuses I will help you out,  since I am always trying to promote living a healthy lifestyle I think it’s only fair that I once in a while keep it balanced and help those who have no desire to improve themselves.

Here are 20 Awesome reasons NOT to go workout today:

You’re saving up for the lap-band surgery.

You’re going to start… and you are going to eat freaking perfect too man… you’re going to do everything right… going to get RIPPED!… and you’re starting tomorrow… it’s going to be so damn awesome!!

You like to train outside. But it’s too hot, too cold, raining, snowing, there’s a tornado warning, or it’s too nice of a day out to be exercising… who works out on a perfect day like this?

You’re waiting until you can afford supplements. You really like supplements.

You’re waiting to get your diet in order.

You saw a website that said it’s better to just take green coffee extract, or Acai extract, or blueberry testicle extract… or some other crazy supplement.

You’d rather take a step away from your goals than take a step towards them.

 You have no goals.

You do not want to hurt yourself.

 You’re waiting for New Year’s… 2017!

You’re in a relationship now so screw it.

You’re going to try Weight Watchers first… Jewelie at work is getting really good results with it.

You do not want to get calluses.

You do not want to get all tight and muscle bound.

You actually do plan on working out today. Right after you finish this beer.

Only insecure people need to work out to overcompensate for their insecurities.

Endorphin’s are addictive and you do not want to get hooked. All it takes is one workout. You’d rather be safe than sorry.

Chicks don’t like guys who work out. They want guys with money.

You let your workout program fall by the side lately, so you’re going to ride it out a while.

 Health isn’t all that important.

Yeah…So just go work out already will you?

If you’re not really  “feeling”  it today just tell yourself you’re just going to do a few light sets. And within 10 minutes you’ll be hitting it hard…DO IT!!

What Inspires You?

REGREGRWGWRGER

I was having a heartfelt and meaningful conversation with my friend about cats, when she asked me what inspires me to keep working out and pushing myself as hard as I do. I had to think about it for a second and I blurted out a few things just because I didn’t want to get too deep into the topic because I wanted to get back to the cat conversation…

But now that I have some time on my hands I thought I would explain what Inspires me to do what I do and why I push myself so hard .

I have never and will never be inspired by Celebrities, who have personal chefs, personal trainers, nutritionists, and the time to devote 24 hours a day to getting healthy. I will admit “time”  is one thing I am fortunate enough to have, it certainly makes it easier for me to devote myself to this lifestyle I live.

I am inspired by normal people who have the same struggles like everyone else yet they commit themselves to doing everything they can to build a better life for themselves.

I am not inspired by the guy in the gym who loads up 350 lbs. on the Smith Machine and does  “Power Curtsies”  (Which are squats that aren’t really squats, they just drop a few inches)

I am inspired by the guy who was in his sixties doing deadlifts with 400 pounds, and after talking to him and hearing his story of losing over 200 pounds of fat and seeing where he is today was Inspirational.

I am inspired by the lady, whose kids are in the gym daycare, who is squatting 125 pounds and is squatting the right way. DEEP!

I am not inspired by people who say they have it all figured out.

I am inspired by the people who are working their asses off every day trying to figure it out.

I am inspired by those people who tell me  “I’ve failed before, which means this time things will be different”

I am inspired by people who took a crappy situation, accepted personal responsibility and changed their fate or got into “Beast Mode”  and made the most of it.

I am inspired by those people who refuse to fall victim to the “Good Enough Syndrome”  Instead they compare themselves to who they were yesterday and much better they are today, and plan to be even better tomorrow.

And I truly am inspired by those people who have faced personal tragedy such as the loss of a limb or being confined to a wheelchair yet have never given up, and work every day bettering themselves instead of feeling sorry for themselves.

If you don’t have it all figured out, don’t worry…Nobody does!

If you find yourself struggling to see progress, don’t forget to give yourself a quiet  “Fist Pump”  for even getting skin in the game in the first place. I had no clue what I was doing ten years ago, and to this day I am still learning. But every day is a new opportunity to learn, adjust and adapt.

Someone once told me that  “Perfection is the enemy of progress”  Waiting for the perfect opportunity or the perfect plan will result in nothing ever happening. Do what you can to Educate yourself, but put one foot in front of the other, and figure things out as you go.

That’s how I do it and YES, I make mistakes, but you have to start in order to know what needs to be done to finish.

Don’t be afraid to fail.  Just be sure to fail differently next time, learn from your mistakes.

Find your inspiration, find what drives you to be the best version of YOU that you can be.  Always remember there is no finish line in the pursuit of a healthy and better YOU, It’s a lifelong process, so never give up on yourself.

I would like to hear what Inspires you..perhaps it can Inspire others as well.

Something Is Better Than Nothing!

yodamofo

So I would like to believe I’m one of those people that will give 100% no matter what it is I’m doing…But, like most people, once in a while I find myself in circumstances beyond my control and giving 100% just isn’t an option.

During these times it might seem easier just to do nothing, I have a valid excuse right? But I like to lean towards doing “something”  It is better than nothing, perhaps you disagree, and maybe you think 100% effort in everything you do is possible. I’m just trying to be realistic.

So when it comes to bettering yourself, doing  “Something”  is almost always better than nothing at all. Unless the “Something”  you’re thinking of happens to be  “eating Doritos while watching Oprah re-runs”  or  “Calling the Psychic Hotline for fitness advice”  The most difficult part of getting healthy can simply be making the first move.

Taking the first step out of your house for a run.

Mixing up the first ingredients for a healthy meal.

Saying  “No”  to that first tasty doughnut at work.

Waking up earlier than usual so you have time to exercise.

If you’re overweight, out of shape and having a rough time in your life.

If you don’t have time for a full workout… Do half of it.

You can’t do a full push up… Do half of one.

Can’t run a full mile… Walk it (this is what I usually do, I hate running)

If you’re going out of town and there’s only bad food. Do the best you can to eat healthy for as many meals possible.

If you can’t pay off $200 bucks a month… Do $100 or $50 or even $25.

So…Is  “Something”  really better than Nothing?

You might be thinking, “This just seems like a lot of half-assing going on here”  and what ever happened to giving it your best in everything you do?

Okay let me clarify this shit, you’re not half-assing it if you can’t do something all the way for a legitimate reason.  For example, weather, unexpected work projects, your kid gets sick, flight delays, food poisoning, whatever..

But… If you can drag your ass out the door for a workout even when you really don’t want to, it will be easier to convince yourself  “Hey, I did it last time, I can do it this time as well.”

And Do Something… Do Anything!!

“No one believes your excuses except for you!”

We all have crappy situations and circumstances that we are dealing with in our lives, Not enough time, Too tired, Bad day at work, Girlfriend cheated on me, Lost my job, My cat ran away, whatever.  These things will only be your downfall if you let them. If you really want to start living a better life, you will need to stop using these excuses as crutches to make yourself feel better about avoiding your responsibilities.

So go do something…Go do anything!

The Morning Struggle

Themorningstruggle

Ah Man…It’s 5am,  I really just want to sleep in, maybe sleep until noon. That’s all I’m thinking right now. I should just toss the blanket up over my head and ignore the cat who has worked herself up into a feeding frenzy…She is a creature of habit just like me, if she doesn’t get her food at 5am she will make sure nobody in the house sleeps…But just today I want to sleep in.

But of course that’s not going to happen, I relent to the cat’s insane antics and get up to feed her. And few moments later I’m two cups into a coffee bender, no chance of going back to sleep now. Besides I’ve already been pretty productive, fed the beast, got dressed for the gym, posted my new morning blog on the social network accounts and most importantly enjoyed a few moments of quality bathroom time (always important to start the day right), trying to get myself motivated for my training session is what seems the toughest thing today… I just don’t want to.

I keep telling myself stop being a little bitch and get it over with.

Well, that didn’t work, perhaps I could go back to sleep, I could just lay on couch and watch the news, that might help me doze off a bit.

Ahh…Man Up and get to the gym!!

Nope…This battle is not going well. The couch looks mighty damn fine this morning and the thought of doing anything remotely strenuous seems about as attractive as a wet, fly covered cat turd.

Screw it…I will just make it up another day.

It’s all over…I caved in, I allowed in inner slacker to win.

Guess I really am just a lazy ass bum.

Then as if out of nowhere the Man in me steps up, grabs me by the balls and whispers. It’s time to go… Go where…Go Train. Why? Because it’s what you do, YOU committed yourself to this process and YOU will not fail!!

The next thing I know I’m giving everything I got. Iron in my hand, the pathetic slacker who was vacillating from just a while ago has been completely forgotten. I am truly living only in the moment!

How the Hell did this Happen?

There isn’t a person on this planet, I don’t care how dedicated you are to this craft that gets pumped for each and every workout. Just not gonna happen.  And anyone who tell you that they do are full of it. When the Motivation is high and you’re on a new routine it can be stimulating. But just give it a few months (some people don’t even last that long) and things start to feel tiresome and stagnant.

Keeping your training routine is tough business, even harder than the routine itself in my opinion. I don’t really think it’s in our nature to want to push ourselves into that painful zone on such a regular basis. Actually at times it feels pretty stupid to keep punishing myself the way I do…It would be so much easier just to simply not do it.

And that is what it all really comes down to, Working out is HARD. And sticking with a routine for the long term is damn near impossible for most. But like most things in life, it’s the challenges that are the most rewarding. Look not to the blessings in life, but to the struggles, for they make us who we are.

So each morning it’s the same. The same struggle. I struggle to gather the motivation to go train. If that fails I struggle to shame myself into working out. And that usually fails as well. All the while, this mental struggle takes its toll on me, it tires me. It’s all pointless, I may as well just do it and get it done with. Because this is what I do, it is the life I have carefully crafted for myself.

This is the key to it all, you have to understand that all the reasons we put ourselves through this struggle, whether it’s for health, for the looks, whatever. All these goals we make for ourselves are just easily discarded pipe dreams when we have no Motivation in us. Sitting my ass on that couch, watching TV will always be more appealing than the pain and punishment I put my body through in that gym.

Motivation is fleeting, Persistence is unstoppable. Or better yet…

Persistence will make YOU unstoppable!

It is Persistence that separates the winner from the rest of the pack. Giving up is just too damn easy. Choose the hard path. Make it what you do. If you’re confronted with two choices, choose the more difficult…If for no other reason than to challenge it. Can you just imagine the character that would be forged from a lifetime of challenge?

Create the image of your body that you will forge from sticking to your routine on all those days you want to quit.

That’s the payoff of persistence.

So on this morning, when working out is the last thing in the world you want to do, just remember…You train because it’s hard. You train because it’s a struggle. It’s the challenge you seek!
