Are you one of those people who don’t like to Exercise?
Maybe you have never been a fan of going to a gym, or just hate lifting weights and all that nonsense. I have found that we humans regardless of our gender, are amazing at justifying and rationalizing the craziest things, like why they don’t like working out.
But you “say” you want to get healthy, but you don’t like traditional exercises. Fine, be that way, but let me enlighten you with a few facts…
If you spend roughly an hour Exercising, maybe burning 300-400 calories, and then stuff your face with 1000 calories of crappy food, then you my friend are FAILING!
In order to “Exercise” you don’t have to “run on a treadmill for hours and be miserable”
The beauty of Exercising is that it can be anything that elevates your heart rate and takes your body outside your normal comfort zone.
Another important element for getting healthy is your diet, it’s responsible for 80-90% of your success or failure when it comes to losing weight and getting healthy. If you were given a choice to fix one thing. Either your diet or exercising, you should pick diet every time.
Alright back to this whole “I don’t like Exercising” nonsense, what you’re really saying is “I don’t enjoy the particular Exercise that I have in mind”
Fine, you don’t like lifting weights in a gym. Then don’t do it. If you hate running, don’t do it…. I myself have never run more than a 5k in my life and have zero plans to ever run more than that…Ever!
The main reason I’m writing this amazing article is just to get to enjoy exercising, by finding new ways to approach your thinking on what “Exercising” has to be, then combine that with making better decisions about the food you put in your body.
Now let’s look at some simple ideas which can make “Exercising” every day something fun and exciting for you to do, and maybe this will help you make other healthy choices throughout your day.
Here are great ways to exercise without feeling like your Exercising….
Geocaching: I just recently saw an ad about this and after I checked it out, it really would be a great way to get some Exercise, it can involve rock climbing, hiking, etc. And you can pretend you’re a Treasure Hunter which sounds pretty cool to me.
Rock Climbing: Okay, so if geocaching involves some climbing why not just go for broke and do the real deal, it is a great arm/back/forearm workout, and you will probably feel like a total Bad Ass once you conquer the big rocks.
Walking: Simple enough, a 15-minute brisk walk is enough time to get close to a mile walked. This is a great way to cruise around your neighborhood and “Snoop” on what’s going down at the Smith’s.
Hiking: Power that walk up to a hike, bring some Amigos, this is a great way to check out the scenery that Mother Nature is showing off, you can go at your own pace and pack a healthy lunch even.
Dancing: I myself really like dancing, I am not very good at it, but it is fun. Try watching a video of some serious swing dancers and you will see it is a workout and while you’re at it you can take a Zumba class, which is sort of like dancing and it really get your heart rate elevated.
Roughhousing With The Kids: If you have kids this is a great way to have some fun with them, get in the backyard and roll around and have some fun, don’t forget what it’s like to be a kid. It keeps you young. (If you don’t have kids of your own, I wouldn’t recommend roughhousing with the kids in the neighborhood. That’s getting creepy)
Martial Arts: Okay if you have watched the Matrix, I imagine you thought how cool it would be to do all that kung-fu crazy spinning around stuff. Well you may not get to that level but it certainly is a great way to Exercise. There are so many different styles to choose from, so go check some studios out watch what they’re doing and see if it interests you.
Okay..You Know: That thing couples do together. Usually in private..alright moving on..
Play Active Video Games: I’m not a Gamer or whatever they call themselves these days, but seems like everyone is into them, so I did some research (asked my kids) and you can play games that make you interact and move with them. Some examples are Wii Tennis, Wii Fit, Just Dance on Xbox Kinect and I think DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) counts too. It’s healthier than playing a normal game where you just sit there and move your fingers and cuss out the TV. So who knows maybe it’s something you would like.
Biking: There are lots of people who bike to work, it might be harder to do during the winter but it’s a great way to get from point A to point B, you save gas money and you get a workout in too.
So there are some ideas that are exercises but not your typical Exercises, remember you’re trying to elevate your heart rate and get outside your normal comfort zone.
Here is some Bonus Advice…
Trying saying “Yes” before you say “No”…Stop saying “I don’t have time” and realize that you do. Stop saying “I can’t afford it” and find a way to make it a priority. And do these things all before you can talk yourself out of it, and a good way to do that is commit in advance, try pre-paying for some classes like Dance, Martial Arts, Rock Climbing. Once you have already paid for something you will be less likely to back out because you really don’t want to throw your money away do you?
If it helps motivate you better go with a friend to these new classes or adventures, just depends on how you look at them. It is amazing what we will do to avoid ridicule from our buddies.
When you’re trying something new for the first time just expect to suck at it, you will get better in time. Just remember to have FUN. Live your life like it’s your last day, who knows it might be, you could get hit by a Mini-van tomorrow morning. Each day above ground is a blessing, so enjoy it.
Have Fun “Not” Exercising..,Sorta
